Releasing this Thursday at GameKnight is an expansion to one of my favourite games around, Dead of Winter. If you've never played it, you're missing out. It's a cooperative post-zombie apocalypse survival game where the players are the leaders of a colony, in charge of finding enough food and supplies to keep everyone healthy, all the while fighting off roving hordes of zombies that want to make breakfast out of your brains.
It's tense, tough and super fun. If you haven't played it, try it some time, maybe rent it through our rental service (see http://gameknight.ca/rentals/). Either way, once you're tried it, you'll understand why I'm so excited for this expansion.
Prior to it arriving in the store yesterday, the only thing I had known about this new expansion was the name: Warring Colonies. This alone elicited a wonderful image of the game becoming a team vs team battle for survival. One colony against another. There's only so much food to go around, and your friends and family are more important than some stranger's colony across town.
Well, I've got the game in hand now, and it's even more exciting than that.
From the back of the box: "Warring Colonies comes with 15 new survivors, 50 new crossroad cards, 43 new items, and 11 new crisis cards, many of which can be used in any game of Dead of Winter." So right off the hop we've got a bunch of new material to incorporate into the existing game. Awesome!
And then there's this: "Warring Colonies [...] supports the new team variant for 4-11 players, in which two colonies compete over the same locations for limited resources and power." Boom. Blam. Explody things. Bombshell.
So the game is going to support a new huge team versus team format, up to 11 (ELEVEN!) players. Sure, you've got own both versions of Dead of Winter to make use of this, but if you enjoy the game as much as I do, you probably do already. Trust me, it's worth it.
From Plaid Hat Games: "In the Warring Colonies variant, unique main objectives set two colonies against each other as they battle for territory with a new fighting system that includes tactics cards, bullet tokens, and 12-sided combat dice. New and terrible joint-colony crisis cards force cooperation and coercion every round. And the odd-man-out Lone Wolf adds chaotic balance as she pursues her own secret goals while keeping both colonies in check."
I don't know about you, but I'm going to be working hard at organizing a game night with as many people as I can to get the full experience. Super excited!
Dead of Winter: Warring Colonies will be available on Thursday, October 12th, 2017 at GameKnight Games, selling at $54.99 + tax. If you still need to pick up either of the Dead of Winter base games, we have them selling at $84.99 + tax.
