Disney Lorcana. A new collectible card game by Ravensburger featuring characters we all know and love from various Disney franchises.
This game is releasing August 18th, 2023, and has had some significant anticipation and hype. We were waiting for quite some time to learn how much product we would be getting, and feared it would not be enough, as production delays and limitations worldwide have been causing countless problems for supply.
We were also waiting to see how the market for the game would shake out. Collectible games are in a rough spot these days, with low supply and high demand driving prices through the roof.
Disney Lorcana has sadly been hit with this same problem. Supply allocations are not nearly high enough to balance out the demand for the product, and a combination of scalpers, speculators, investors and "whales" (collectors with too much money) have driven the prices up through the roof.
It puts a business like ours in a tough situation. We're getting limited product, and have to decide between selling at a reasonable price and having everything snapped up by resellers, or sell at closer to market value and make it very difficult for regular gamers to get into the game.
I've been stewing on this for quite some time now, and sadly there is no clear answer, and no good answer. One of those old "damned if you do, damned if you don't" sort of things.
The lack of supply makes it very difficult to start any organized play program. Even if we devoted every single booster pack to organized play, it would run out quickly and leave players with no ability to expand their collections.
After so much deliberation and discussion, we've decided to hold off on a full organized play program for now until such a time that there is the supply to support it. Sealed product will be sold at near market values (which is not cheap, no question).
We WILL be looking at holding a launch event, with starter decks and limited other product available for in-store use. This will give a chance to local players to pick up some initial product, learn the game, and connect with other gamers. This event will have product priced at typical values instead of inflated market values, so will be a great opportunity to save a few bucks on your starter product.
This is not how we wanted Lorcana to shape up. We're hoping we see supply restocks in the future that will better support legitimate play.
