Concurrent to the launch of Marvel's Spider-man, weekly Standard Showdown events are going to be discontinued. For some folks, this will likely not be surprising news to hear, while for others this may be disappointing. Between a rather unsatisfying Standard environment (with Vivi & Soul Cauldron decks having more than 50% of the meta share) and an inability to consistently fire events, we’ve made the decision to remove the event from the calendar.
What will happen with Magic: the Gathering Store Championships?
GameKnight still intends to support Store Championship tournaments once per season, likely on the last or second last Saturday of a given season.
Will GameKnight still distribute Standard Showdown promos?
Yes, though because of Wizards of the Coast’s promotional usage guidelines, we cannot hand out current season promos unless it’s at a Standard Showdown event. For example, the “Marvel’s Spider-man” Standard Showdown promos cannot be handed out at any event other than Standard Showdown events until after the release of “Avatar: The Last Airbender”.
However, once Avatar comes out, the Spider-man Promos become what WotC considers to be “Surplus Promos”, and at that point we can use the promos more loosely as Organized Play support. The specifics of how that would look remain to be seen, but we will include any relevant information in event descriptions once a decision has been made.
Will any of GameKnight’s other MtG events be changing?
Beyond a reduction in tickets for Friday Night Magic Spider-man drafts due to product allocations, no other events will be dropping or changing at this time.
